Be the Idea

March 4, 2011

When you’re brainstorming ways to improve a product or simply thinking up a brand new idea – imagine you’re the idea.  I was recently reading the book,  Whack on the Side of the Head, by Roger VonOech.    It is a great book that can help technical types be a bit more creative.  One way to do this is to imagine that you are the idea your team is discussing.  Be the Idea

Imagine that you’re a parking meter.  How does it feel when coins are inserted in you? What is it like when you’re expired. How could you be easier to use?   It is OK to get silly.   A lot of creative ideas can come out of silliness.  You can take time later to contemplate all the ideas that are generated.

Imagine that you’re a box of cereal on a grocery shelf.  How can you be more attractive?   What can you do to force the grocer to give you more shelf space?

Try it next time you find yourself in a brainstorming session.  How would you feel if you were the idea you’re developing?
